The Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile (CHAT) is part of the heritage conservation project of The Mills. Well before its official opening, CHAT had already hosted a series of original community art events dedicated to the craft and industry of weaving. After several years of renovation, CHAT finally opened in March 2019, transforming the 1950s cotton spinning mills of Nan Fung Textiles into a rare art space in Tsuen Wan.
Spanning 30,000 square feet, CHAT comes with the highest ceilings in The Mills complex. It hosts several exhibition spaces, workshops, virtual reality experiences and retail areas.
The first space that many visitors explore is The D. H. Chen Foundation Gallery, which tells the history of the factory. Here you will find interesting displays of machinery from different periods of the old mills dating back to the 1950s through the 1990s, as well as a multitude of textile products manufactured for all aspects of life.
Currently, most of CHAT’s spaces host shows jointly created by local and international artists, rather than permanent exhibitions. Curated by Takahashi Mizuki, a founding curatorial member of Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, CHAT’s opening exhibition “Unfolding: Fabric of Our Life” features works by multiple Asian artists who explore textiles from different social and cultural angles.
As part of the wider exhibition programme, CHAT will also organize a range of workshops and guided activities. Please check the CHAT website for details.
